. . I can hear you making small holes in the silence rain . . A snippet from the beautiful poem Rain by Hone Tuwhare. Today as I listened to the rain pour at St Clair beach (and watched the wild sea), I learnt about this highly respected New Zealand poet. Hone Tuwhare was born in Kaikohe in 1922. He came to Dunedin in 1969 when he was awarded the Robert Burns Fellowship and made Dunedin home for 23 years. In 1992 he moved to Kaka Point in South Otago, where he spent his final years and it is thought the scenery (and perhaps weather) influenced his work. Rain was voted New Zealand’s favourite poem in 2007.
